The Teapot Cottage, Totoro's Farm, and the Sharing Gnome

I'm once again entering the annual Fairy Garden Contest, sponsored by one of my favorite blogs, The Magic Onions. You can check out the rules for the contest and enter your own here! http://www.fairygardens.com/contest/ But don't delay...the contest ends tomorrow!!!! And this year, I was involved in a miniature gardening workshop where I began this gnome garden. A shout out to Buchanan's Native Plants here in Houston, TX, where I picked out all these adorable props! As you may notice, the gnome is feeling rather festive with his bunting flags and musical wind chimes! It's too bad my cat, Merlin, snipped off the top of the front plant with his blood-thirsty fangs before I snapped this photo...ughh cats...

Briggs was also inspired to use a few left-over props and other pieces we had lying around the house. He wanted to keep his on top of his dresser in his bedroom. Don't you just love that little froggy on top of the mushroom!

And finally, we have a collaborated effort, but giving Finn most of the credit since he is always playing with these cutezy wootzy Totoro figurines. I'm quite fond of the cat bus in the cactus!

Well, that about does it for now. Stay tuned, because I'm already plotting my next visit to the garden center to pick up Autumn themed props for the next one!

Not Back to School

This week has been both good and awful.

1. Monday-Briggs turned 5, and for his birthday we explored the Butterfly exhibit at the museum. This week we are focusing our activities around butterflies and bugs. We started backyard observation journals, and filled up our hummingbird feeders to get ready for migration to begin.

2. Tuesday-Briggs got the flu, and the only thing good to say was there was less fighting between the boys that day.

3. Wednesday-It hasn't been very humid out at all for the past 4 days! There's an underlying coolness to the air...very subtle, but you can tell that fall is around the corner. Finn and I gathered sticks to make spider web cachers. So far no spider has spun anything in them.

4. Thursday-Finn got the flu.

5. Friday- No one is sick, everyone feels great! We found out where the Arboretum Nature Center is, and took a nice stroll in the woods this morning. We also saw a snake that startled me very badly! We're invited to a pizza making party this evening.

Cat update: Our raccoon, Merlin, is doing well. He's able to open doors, cabinet drawers, and probably other things that he shouldn't be getting into. He loves to kill plants. The tips of all my house plants are yellow because he bites them. He must have venom in his teeth that poisons the leaves! He sleeps all day under our bed covers, and is crazy in the evenings. We have to shut our bedroom door because he runs around all night long being too loud. I'm glad he's friendly though.

Beating the Houston heat

Thought I'd update everyone on what we've been up to. We have a lengthy list of projects we've completed, but the one I'd like to share is our gnome kingdom. We've discovered that every plant (in the gnome section) loves to die in this weather, so the ones that have survived are the succulents and a few natives that I'm nursing back from wilt every day with a jug full of water :( The boys have been making tiny gardens of their own, and then placing them around the yard. Here's a few photos I snapped of our magical little land.
This is a mom design.

Cowboy gnome has eggs and cabbages for sale. And the most sought after cottage in all of Gnometopia!

Just outside of the castle grounds lies a unicorn flower garden.

I'm having fun learning about fall gardening here, and am slowly planting things that are appropriate for the season. So far: tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, cukes, okra, and zucchini squash. I'm even trying my hand at a couple citrus trees. The hummingbirds are supposed to be on there way this month, so I'm keeping my feeder fresh to lure them into the yard. I've strategically placed my plants in a way that I'll be able to squeeze in as many as I can. Will be using the wall to trellis, and train some to go different ways, and grow under taller plants..hopefully without crowding each other out too bad!
First attempt at raised bed gardening...sure takes some getting used to!

It's no surprise that swimming is a part of our daily lives. We have the pool, twirling sprinkler, and wiggly noodle sprinkler to choose from. But after about an hour, the water starts feeling like you're in a hot tub.The boys were excited because today we found new swim trunks: SuperMan and SpiderMan...their recent obsessions.
Twirly sprinkler plus the pool!

Also, Ted and I have decided to start a cooperative (parent owned) preschool for the neighborhood/surrounding areas. We are meeting with other parents this week to discuss our short term goals and develop a solid plan. I'm thrilled to be a part of this!

That's about all I have time for today, so fare thee well.

Move to Houston

Among the boxes on our last day in Lawrence
Just a few highlights from the last 2 weeks of moving madness....

Participated in a 4th of July bike parade and everyone wished us a "Happy 4th". One house we pedaled by even had a patriotic song blaring on repeat! We must be in the South?

Our house is full of musical appliances. I still can't get over that we have a dishwasher, it's just too easy!

Oh and outside of the house, there are remote controls for opening and shutting things all over the place. Gates, garage doors, fans.

Today I met the community gardening group, got advice on seed starting and the planting calendar for this coastal climate, and came home with a bag full of the most delicious figs.

Max started crawling 2 days ago!

Ted has built us a bunch of wood things: Work bench, Bunk beds, Swords, Coat/hat tree, and fixed a broken chair and broken bookshelf. Yay for garages!
He has a garage, but I have a she-room with A.C.

We've discovered some fun parks and playgrounds during our morning outings. The boys liked the "train playground" in the Heights.

I've become a rewards member at a new favorite garden center, and have really racked up the points there.

I started a gnome garden, of course, and yesterday added a herd of unicorns to the kingdom.

First thing on the list: Put grill together so we can feel at home

Runs are very hot here

Finn sharing his birthday goodies with the bros

Last week it rained a lot

Way Down Yonder in the Hollow Tree

I feel like I should share our mountain trip we took last week, since it was so much fun.

Day 1: We left in the van with just our camping gear, and a plan to meet a realtor in Asheville, NC by the end of the week. We decided to wing it, since our vacations usually end up being rad that way. We went to the Springfield Brewing Company for dinner that evening, and got to hear a live band. By the time we arrived to our "campground" area, it was very late, and very dark. Our gas light came on, and we were sort of lost in the wilderness because we couldn't see any signs with directions. Not only was it a little spooky being in the woods, but since it was a wildlife refuge, there were like thousands of deer all grazing around us in the fields, on the roads, surrounding our van... After making several U-turns, we found what we thought was the campgrounds and pulled into a spot  The next morning a park ranger stopped and told us we weren't even in the campgrounds, haha! But since we were packed up, he told us to be on our way and don't bother even paying for the night!

Day 2: Left Big Springs camp and road-tripped through the rest of the Ozarks, Illinois, Kentucky, and half way through Tennessee. We tried to check out breweries in Nashville, but nothing was open that afternoon. But we were able to find a nice campground in the mountains and set up while it was still light out. I played fiddle for entertainment, we enjoyed wine, ate cheddar brats made over the fire, and took hot showers that night.

Day 3: Drove through the Smoky Mountains and on into North Carolina. Things were starting to look beautiful! Oh, and all those wildflowers! We were in Asheville by 3, so we walked around just exploring the city and all it had to offer. Can't say enough about all the shops. Super interesting! I found an awesome tea/salt/herb shop and of course had to get some Ginger Turmeric, and Cinnamon Plum teas. We rode on a trolley to get a feel of the area. Saw a little bit of the Biltmore village, but didn't get to see the mansion. Then we went to Wicked Weed Brewery, and discovered it's amazing selection of craft beers. By the way, Asheville has over 14 breweries and it's even a smaller city than Lawrence! Anyway, Wicked Weed.. I got a cool cucumbeer. Ted got some type of cherry/pepper beer, and a mint julep flavored one. We also found a community co-op store that was pretty much identical to the Merc. That night, because it was raining, we caved and got a hotel room.

Day 4: We met with the realtor, Tom. He got to ride along in our crammed van with all the pee/poop/barf/normal kid stuff happening all day long. We saw 6 different farm properties that day. The 3rd one was up by Marshall, and it was an old abandoned vineyard that we really fell in love with. We're still talking about all the awesome things we could do with it. Later that night, we ate burritos at Mamacita's, and enjoyed people watching. We found a KOA campground for sleeping at.

Day 5: This is the day we were all starting to get exhausted from travel. The morning started out a little rough (probably because we ate at Waffle House...haha), and by the time we got to the first property Max had a huge diaper blow-out. Had to do a total outfit change, and remove the car seat insert. Tom lent us one of his signs in the back of the truck and a spray bottle to get everything cleaned up in the middle of a pasture. We still owe him one! We saw a mountain farm with an amazing waterfall river up by one of the national forests. The very last farm we saw that day was also one of our top picks. It had a bunch of old barns on the property, a river that you had to cross by a really cool bridge, and plenty of cleared land that could be turned into gardens. Finn fell asleep in his carseat, woke up because he peed...Briggs had to poop and we finally convinced him to go outside. We started heading back west and got about an hour down the road when we realized we forgot the baby backpack carrier in Tom's truck. Ugh! So Ted dropped me and the kids off at the campground, and drove back to Asheville then had to drive back to us. It was just a long day..

Day 6: We were camped right beside the Appalachian Trail, and decided to hike part of it to a place called Midnight Hole, which is a waterfall and swimming hole. The hike was just what we all needed. The river was ice cold, but Briggs and Finn both got in for a couple seconds! I got talked into jumping off a rock into the ice pool. My entire body turned bright red and stayed that way for a long time. Thanks post pregnancy hormones.. By the time we got back to the campsite, it had just started to sprinkle. We barely got the rain fly on the tent when it started to storm. Our tent isn't the most water-proof, and we started getting wet. We used almost all the towels and dirty clothes to mop up the pools that were forming in the tent, and huddled together in the very middle where it was still dry. We waited about 2 hours, then decided to pack everything up and get a hotel for the night. We drove to Knoxville, TN and spent the rest of the evening doing laundry, and enjoying the hotel's luxuries.

Day 7: Drove most of the day, and ended up back in that same campground in the Ozarks that we stayed the very first night. We actually set up in the real campground this time though, and were right next to the river. We got to swim in the not-so-icey river, and were having a good ole time, until Briggs saw a snake in the water. I was too scared to get back in, but the boys just kept on swimming, even little Max! He had a blast.

Day 8: We got to visit my favorite seed company, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, and explored the little village. I bought a sun bonnet like the prairie gals wore in all the pioneer books, and got some seeds for our garden in Houston. We didn't have time to see Laura Ingles Wilder's old house, but I did convince Ted to drive through an Amish community. We met a huge group of horse and buggies with guys in straw hats that had just got done working a field. It was great! You know how much I'm fascinated with Amish culture :) We had lunch at the Springfield Brewery again, then got back to Lawrence by late afternoon.

Now we know a little more about the area. Asheville isn't really the city for us, but it's a really cool place. We really like Marshall, and the smaller towns around Asheville. They were still really hip and progressive, but not as touristy. Not sure it we'll buy anything yet, but we'll definitely be back.

Graduation

It's been a fun weekend having the Morehouse clan come for a visit. Briggs graduated from pre school, and Master Ted is DONE!! So proud of my boys :)
We were eating breakfast this morning, and noticed that Max cut his first tooth.
It's going to be a busy rest of the month:
We're starting our house hunting adventure tomorrow in Houston, and hope to get something by the end of the week or sooner. Then we come back and my niece is having her 1st birthday party.
I think we're having a garage sale sometime over Memorial Day weekend.
Depending on when we can get a lease, our movers are ready for us to give them a heads up on when we want them to start packing up our stuff. But after that's done, we are headed south.
And then, if it's possible, we hope to go on a roadtrip in a few weeks to Asheville, NC and explore the city and look at real estate. We saw something on Zillow today that got us pumped!
Fare Thee Well,

Tea and biscuits...

I feel very lazy today. I'm sort of in the mood to wander around in the garden with my umbrella while sipping tea, nibbling biscuits, and just talk about the royal princess all day.
This morning we put a bunch of old pictures in photo albums, in the correct order. That was a task...somehow the pictures got all shuffled around and we had to get on the computer to see when we took them. These are from over 2-3 years ago, so we had no idea! Anyhow, that's done...pheew!
Here are some more recent ones:

Morehice Meet-up

It's a new year, and I do feel refreshed and energized! I think that's partly due to this past week of reflection, rest...
